I wonder if the people who want to thin out the snow geese have
considered using trained sheep dogs to chase them. There are some
entrepreneurs around now who rent out these dogs just for this purpose.
There used to be a terrible problem with Canada geese on the corporate
grounds where I used to work. First they were going to kill all the
goslings, but that almost started a riot! They tried everything else,
from electric fences to obnoxious loud broadcasts of high pitched
noises. Finally, they rented some sheep dogs to keep them away, and it
worked like a charm. The dogs don't hurt the geese, they just keep
chasing them so they can't settle in and nest. They don't even need the
dogs all the time, only as needed. I'm sure the area where the snow
geese are is much bigger than the corporate park, but maybe it could
still work (with a lot of dogs?) The geese that are alive now would
naturally have to go "somewhere else", but it could keep future numbers
down. Well anyway, its just an idea.
