Tweets,
While eating breakfast and drinking coffee this morning while reading the
current (March) Atlantic Monthly, I came across a 2/3 page advertisement from
which I quote the entire text. (Reading while eating is an indulgence only
enjoyed while my wife is out of town).
"!CAUTION CONTENTS MAY CAUSE YOU TO THINK ABOUT THE EXPOITATION OF SMALL
COFFEE FARMERS BY LARGE CORPORATIONS It may be a little early in the morning
to bring this up, but if you buy coffee from large corporations, you are
inadvertently maintaining the status quo in which poor farmers get poorer and
middlemen get richer. However, by drinking Equal Exchange coffee, you can
change this. We believe in trading directly with small farming cooperatives
at mutually agreed-upon prices with a fixed minimum rate. Then, should the
coffee market decline, the farmers are still guaranteed a fair price. So have
a cup of Equal Exchange coffee and make a small farmer happy. For more
information about Equal Exchange, or to order our line of gourmet and organic
coffee directly, call 1-800-265-0629. [signed] EQUAL EXCHANGE - FAIRLY
TRADED GOURMET COFFEE"
