I had a similar experience with whiskered screech owl in SE Arizona. I
was able to call in a group of birders from the San Francisco area, it
was really pretty funny. As it turned out, they were raptor banders
at the Marin headlands banding operation, we spent the rest of the
week meandering around SE Arizona. That fall, after the Goshutes,
I trucked down to SF, invited to stay with two of the banders (in their
fifties, the lady being a retired professional race car driver and
the fellow a retired fighter pilot). Caught a redtail. Spent a
few days tracking a "radio-tailed" hawk with them in the ag country
in the San Joaquin valley.

All this from playing a tape as a prank on some strangers!
