Columbia Estuary Report - 3/9/97

I drove over Nicolai Mt yesterday encountering about 6 inches of snow at
to top, though the road is reasonably clear (I made it through in my Toyota).
Most notable was a happily singing PYGMY OWL near the 3.5 mi marker.
I also managed GRAY JAY at two stops one carrying a small dark brown vole.

Two SNOWY OWLS were still at the SJCR today (845hr) both sitting in the
tops of spruce trees.

This weekend's owl count:
Western Screech-Owl (3 along Ft Clatsop Rd)
Great Horned Owl (1 near Shively Park)
Snowy Owl (2 at Ft Stevens)
Northern Pygmy Owl (1, Nicolai Mt)
Northern Saw-whet (1, Ft Clatsop Rd)

Andrew Emlen heard a Saw-whet Owl at Shively Park on 3/6/97, but I was
unable to get it to respond tonight.
