We also spent a frustrating number of hours looking for the Hawk Owl on
Sunday and came away empty-handed. It was rather windy and overcast with a
few sprinkles. The only birds around were a couple of very quiet crows, many
robins, a flock of Golden-Crowned Kinglets and some house sparrows. Also
several Red-Tailed Hawks. The highlight of the day was two-fold. First, a
Snowy Owl along highway 2. Second, Comet Hale-Bopp was easily seen from
Highway 283 looking west-northwest with the naked eye and even better with
binocs. This is well worth the look, if you are interested in star-gazing.
