Saturday morning Mar 15, in Umatilla County, in north central Oregon, we
found: 1 N MOCKINGBIRD, 3 male EURASIAN WIGEONS, 12 LB CURLEWS, 1 HARRIS
SPARROW, SANDHILL CRANES.
The Mocker was west of Echo (south of Hermiston). On Echo Meadows road, just
south of the freeway is a gravel road named Emert Rd. Go west 1.7 miles
near the most western pond. It was being secretive in the bushes. Assuming
it wintered, that seems unusual, but there is the Moro, Sherman County bird
& one just north in Washington.
One male (& maybe a female) EURASIAN WIGEON was at Mann Pond which is along
the west bound I84 freeway at mp 184. This is the pond where Tri-colored
Blackbirds have been in the past. (None yet)
Two male EURASIAN WIGEONS were just south of the southern entrance to Cold
Springs Reservoir on Loop Road. With 1,000 American Wigeon. This is
definitely a record high number of Eurasians for the county.
A flock of 12 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were along Buttercreek near southern
Umatilla County. Take exit 182 & go south on highway 207. These were all
we saw so they were new arrivals.
An immature HARRIS SPARROW was just nw of Mann Pond on Stanfield Meadows
road at mile post 3. Take exit 182 & then first paved road on right. With
White-crowned Sparrows as usual. I don't consider this sighting to be rare
in Umatilla County. My record is six at my feeder many years ago.
We heard two flocks of SANDHILL CRANES flying over the Hermiston area.
We only saw one swallow. A VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW.
We only saw one YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
We did not see any Cinnamon Teal despite looking.
Nice day. NO RAIN! A little snow at dawn, but it melted.
Good Birding,
Craig Corder Yes, this lister does bird locally also.
