Enjoyed a five day trip to the scenic coast (weather
notwithstanding). The birding was very enjoyable, but a couple of
sightings have puzzled me. First, a say's phoebe in the brushy dunes at
the mouth of the Siuslaw river seemed a little out of place (I know that
these birds are early migrants but do they generally occur along the
coast?). Second, My wife and I are convinced that we saw a pair of common
grackles by a roadside just north of Roseburg. As a visitor from B.C., I
have no knowledge of the status of this species in Oregon. Can anyone
shed light on these matters?
