I would like to put in a plug for insulated, waterproof (waterresistent?)
boots. I got used to using them in the winter in Arizona but after some years
I discovered that they were great in the rather hot summer deserts as well as
the insulation kept my feet cooler and I started wearing them year round
while birding. Part of thinking was that they would provide some protection
from rattlesnake bites. Fortunately, I never had the opportunity to test
that.
In WA they have kept my feet warm and dry in the worst conditions. My
current pair is expensive and heavy but it is worth it. They are Irish
Setters with some Gore-Tex on the sides. I think the insulation is Thinsulate
but am not sure. I think Red Wing makes them. They reccommend silicone water
repellent which I use all too infrequently.
They also offer ankle support. The lightweight hiking boots I used to use
soon turned in or out (I probably need an orthotic but had no problems with
dress shoes) and always seemed to be wet as there was always a stream to
cross.
