I'm afraid that this isn't a very exotic recipe but it seems to work for =
Steller's Jays, Gray Jays, Downies and Hairies, and less often-BC =
Chickadees & Juncoes. Unfortunately, these days the migrating Starlings =
are all over it as well.
Ingredients:
Equal parts of
Lard
Peanut butter
Cornmeal
Mixed bird seed
Melt the lard and peanut butter, stir in the meal and seed. Stir. =
Pour into containers and freeze.
=20
I use those plastic tubs that margarine comes in, pour the mixture into =
each to a height of about 2" so that the cakes fit into my suet feeders. =
I usually do about 2 cups of each item, and then have a supply of frozen =
cakes ready to go when I need them. As the weather warms up, I decrease =
the amount of peanut butter. It seems to melt in warmer weather; plus I =
can't stand the idea of feeding peanut butter to Starlings.
