I feed about 20 crows every morning with bread coated with lard and
microwaved, and lots of unsalted peanuts in the shell.

Next to where I feed them is a clear plastic container of bird water which
the crows use for dunking the bread. This morning one crow dumped 4 or 5
pieces of bread into the water to soak and then was startled and flew.
Another crow promptly went to retrieve the soaked bread which had sunk to
the bottom of the container. I could see through the clear plastic side
that the second crow had his head completely under water as he retrieved the
chunks of wet bread, he appeared to have his (her) eyes open and be actively
seaching for the bread chunks under water.

I was amazed to see a crow immerse its head; but to open its eyes under
water (if it did) seems rather remarkable behavior.
