Other than a little rain on Sat. night, the weather Fri.-Sun. was very
nice at the Astoria-Long Beach, Wash. area.Since it was a time of total
relaxation, and for 'catching up on one's sleep', I didn't do any *real
serious* birding. However, I did hike around some, and saw many types of
birds.
-------------At Astoria-South jetty-south shore of Columbia area: Many
gulls, including 1 Thayers Gull, anda Mew Gull; Ring-necked Ducks,
White-winged Scoters, and many Surf-Scoters; 2 Barrows Goldeneye; along
with Scaup and other common diving and dipping ducks..........
-------------At Long Beach peninsula, and Willapa Bay: Brant(many);
Common Goldeneyes, Red-breasted Mergansers; Green-winged Teals(many);
Greater Yellowlegs (6); Caspian Tern(1); West. Sandpipers and
Sanderlings; many,many Dunlin; Black-bellied Plovers(3); Black
Turnstones; numerous Surf-Scoters and Western Grebes; Pied-billed
Grebe(1); a loon (species not identified due to distance, and winter
garb); Great Blue Herons; along with Bufflehead and plenty of the usual
"puddle-ducks" including No. Shoveler on Willapa Bay.
-------------At Cathlamet,Wash. White-tail Deer Refuge area and at Deep
River area( west of Grays River, Wash.): scads of Canada Geese; 1
Eurasian Widgeon(in a large flock of Am. Widgeons) with very bright
breeding plumage; Wood Ducks(7); Hooded Merganser (1); Common
Mergansers, No. Harrier Hawk; Gadwall(2); Tree Swallows, Cliff Swallows;
and some Wrens, along with Crows, and Robins, and many more dipping and
diving ducks..........
-------------Most of everything seen was still in winter plumage.
