I recently read a not-so-recent study of Ring-necked Pheasant mortality
from (I think) circa the 1940s in which the authors concluded that brush
along the road in the Palouse was a significant factor in RN Pheasant
road-kill. (I don't have the reference here, but if Hortus West wants
it, a search in the UW library catalog should turn it up easily.)

For the wildlife, it's probably better if houses and business buffer
greenbelts from roads, but I prefer that my dwelling be set back from the
road and buffered by distance and vegetation. That is, both wildlife and
people prefer not to live adjacent to roads.
