I took the Edmonds Kingston Ferry lastSaturday and Sunday, and I noticed
on both trips that the Edmonds pilings were occupied exclusively by
Brandt's Comorants, while the Kingston pilings were home to only Double
Crested Comorants. On a similar note, The Goldeneyes at the Ballard Locks
this winter were (there are still a few around) about 90 % Barrows while
at Shilshole/Golden Gardens just a mile down the road they were about the
same percentage Common Goldeneyes. I know that different species of the
same family don't exclusively avoid each other, but is there a propensity
among birds to that end? Thanks.

P.S. There were also large numbers of Pigeon Guillemots popping up along
the ferry's path, kind of cool to see.
