My info will be a bit out-dated but here it is:

We were there in 1987 and used Collins Handguide to the Birds of the
Indian Sub-continent (1984). But it is a simplified book (only one-half
inch thick). It describes and illustrates 545 of the 1250 bird species
recorded in the Indian sub-continent. There were (and I
would expect, still) lots of book stores in India and with reasonable
prices.

If you get a chance read any books by and of Salim Ali, the ornithologist.

Check out Bharatpur Sanctuary; I know it's great as a wintering area, not
sure what it is like in the summer.

Enjoy yourself, it is an interesting country.
