My wife and I went on the Sat., 3/29, cruise of Protection and other islands
out from Port Townsend. It was a nice but very windy day with lots of choppy
water until we got to the lee side of the island. We saw hundreds of Brant;
large numbers of Pigeon Guillemot (mostly in breeding plumage), Harlequin
Ducks, Red-necked Grebes, Red-breasted Mergansers; a few Oldsquaws were still
around, BlackTurnstones, Sanderlings and Surfbirds; and a couple of Black
Oystercatchers as well as the usual loons, scoters, cormorants, and gulls..
All in all an enjoyable trip. A naturalist onboard gave us an interesting
rundown on the history and geology of the area. These trips put on by the
Port Townsend Marine Science Center still go on each Saturday thru April.
