Last year while camping near Republic in NE Washington, a birding friend
and I saw two shrikes through his scope. As we drove down this dirt road,
we noticed 4 more. Then 6 more. When our senses finally cleared, we
realized that we were looking at gray jays in our "road" sightings. He
was a much more experienced birder than me, and we were both fooled. On
that trip, we saw ONE Townsend's Solitaire and perhaps hundreds of gray
jays. So from my limited experience, it's more likely to see a group of
gray jays together than Townsend's Solitaires--but rememember, I said
LIMITED experience!
