This thread reminds me of an experience on the Pawnee Grasslands, northern CO,
in early Spring some 25 years ago. While wandering around in some hill & swale
country I flushed five Northern Shrikes out of a brush pile. I thought it was
pretty unusual to see a flock of these birds. I can see how Gray Jays could be
mistaken for shrikes at a distance. (No Gray Jays on the Pawnee!)
