have a house finch at my feeder which appears to have some sort of growth
low on the forehead about at about the top of the bill and slightly off
center, obscuring its left eye. I can't be sure, but it appears "boney" or
hard, not at all fleshy....snip... Has anyone noticed a similar abnormality
and if so, what is it?

Yes, I'd like to know what this is as well. A couple of weeks ago a female
house finch showed up with a tumor-like growth over her left eye. It has
grown over time and is now quite large. I noticed the male accompanying her
the other day had one of his eyes closed, although there was no growth at
that point.
