As promised yesterday...............The first 'installment' of my trip
to California will take place in the Jackson-San Andreas, Calif. area in
the central Sierra foothills-----elevation 500-1500 ft. Type of terrain
is savanna, and open, hilly oak woodlands with some pine. This is the
country where my daughter and grandchildren live.
----------Little in the way of wetlands are present, so there is little
mention of waterfowl. Common birds that we see all the time in Wash. and
no. Oreg, like Robins, Mallards, Great Egrets, Red-winged Blackbirds,
etc. will not be mentioned, even though they were seen. So here goes the
list!!!!!!!!!

Mountain Bluebirds(2)
Black-throated Grey Warbler
Swainson's Hawk(2)
Sharp-shinned Hawk(1)
Red-tailed and No. Harrier Hawks
Turkey Vultures(numerous!!!)
Yellow-billed Magpies
Lark Sparrows(3)
Rough-winged Swallows
Brewer's Blackbirds
Western Kingbird(frequent)
Scrub Jays
Lazuli Bunting(not positive---moved too fast!!!!)
Cedar Waxwing(1)
Purple Martins(5)
Western Meadowlark(4)
Common Yellowthroats
Rufous-crowned Sparrow
House Finches(numerous!!!!!

------Not too bad, considering the lack of time that I had for much
hiking and bird-watching. The next report will be Colusa, and Sacramento
NWRS.-----in the central Calif. valley------Here's where the list starts
to get *really* interesting!!!!!!
