Columbia Estuary Report - 5/11/97

The TENNESSEE WARBLER found Saturday afternoon was (apparently)
not relocated today.

The unofficial Clatsop Co. NAMC results were 121 species and 21553
individuals (10000 of this total was COMMON MURRE). There were
no outrageous misses.

A single BROWN PELICAN was roosting with the BRANDT'S CORMORANTS
on Ecola Pt. 414 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS were off Ecola as well. A
huge movement of PACIFIC LOONS (683 before the observers tired of
counting) was quite impressive. BONAPART'S GULLS and 2 (probable)
ARCTIC TERNS were also recorded by sea watchers.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at the Cannon Beach Sewage Treatment Plant,
as was a flock (7 birds flying like WESA) of SPOTTED SANPIPERS.
This species was clearly on the move this weekend; there were even
2 on the South Jetty hanging with WANDERING TATTLERS.

Shorebirds were well represented. The count totals follow:
bbplover 12
semiplover 73
killdeer 9
bloyster 2
spotsnad 11
whimbrel 16
gryellowlegs 2
redknot 9
wandtattler 3
sandering 1052
westsnad 4325
leastsnad 390
dunlin 915
lbdowitcher 22
rnphalarope 40

Many thanks to Alan Contreras, Judith Ramaly and company for their efforts
on South Jetty seawatch. Anyone else who was in the county on Saturday, I'm
waiting to hear from you.

I will place the official results on a web page by the end of
this week.
