This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for May 6, 1997.

On April 24, Dennis Rockwell found a WARBLING VIREO, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
and LINCOLN'S SPARROW along the Two Rivers Park nature trail.

Bob ?Verding reported 22 SNOW GEESE at the McNary Refuge on April 26.

The following day, Carol Louderback saw a WESTERN BLUEBIRD in her Kennewick
yard and Ruth Fischer had male RUFOUS and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS at her
feeder in Richland.

GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were reported by Ruth Fischer on April 28, by Dennis
Rockwell on April 28, 29, and May 1 when 4 were present, by Mary Nowakowski
on April 28 when she also had 2 PINE SISKIN, by Scott Dietert on April 30
and May 1 and by Carol and Ron Louderback on May 2 when they also had 2 pair
of EVENING GROSBEAKS.

On May 1, Wilson Cady observed a SNOWY EGRET near the Crow Butte State Park
causeway. This bird which is very rare in Washington remained at least
through May 5 (when it was seen circling high and then flying upstream)

The presence of possible WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS was reported by Tom Bergdorf?
on May 3 but the location was not given.

Mike and MerryLynn Denny found on the Walla Walla Delta 6 MARBLED GODWIT and
4 TUNDRA SWAN on May 3, an immature GLAUCOUS GULL, 15 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
40 DUNLIN and 37 AMERICAN AVOCET on May 4. Mike also mentioned that a ROSS'
GOOSE was present on May 4 on a pond along Highway 11 just north of the
Oregon line.

Another ROSS' GOOSE was found by Dennis Rockwell in Two Rivers Park on May 5.

Birds of interest discovered on Washington Ornithological Society's field
trips included a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, TURKEY VULTURE, GOLDEN EAGLE and 2
PRAIRIE FALCONS near the Midway power station at Vernita on May 4, an
EASTERN KINGBIRD along Highway 240 north of Richland on May 1, and a LEWIS'
WOODPECKER at Madame Dorian Park, near the Walla Walla Delta on May 3.
[Other great sightings were not necessarily called into the alert - 164
species were seen during the conference.]

In addition to the Snowy Egret in Crow Butte State Park on May 5, Nancy
LaFramboise and I (Bob Woodley) found 3 WARBLING VIREOS, 3 ORANGE-CROWNED, 2
NASHVILLE, 3 YELLOW and 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 3 WESTERN TANAGERS, and 2
BULLOCK'S ORIOLES. Later that day, Nancy & Bill LaFramboise added a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 3 WESTERN and
7 LEAST SANDPIPERS

This morning, Ruth Fischer reported the first BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK to
appear locally.
