>From The Dictionary of American Bird Names: " William Swainson (1789-1855).
Widely traveled and versatile naturalist. Visited the shores of the
Mediterranean and South America. He collected, illustrated, and
wrote..........He wrote on molluscs, fish and animals. Audubon met him in
England and was helped by his favorable reviews. They traveled to Paris
together and met Cuvier and other French Scientists. Audubon failed to
obtain Swainson's services as joint author in describing birds. Swainson
emigrated to New Zealand in 1841 where he became attorney general. Audubon
named a warbler for him and Bonaparte a hawk. We also have his name in the
common name for a thrush."
