I heard and saw a Northern Bobwhite at the Ballard locks this morning, a
first for me. I was almost to the end of the path near the 'curved
stairs' when I heard the whistle, then saw the bird walking on the upper
path at head height about 10 feet away and it whistled again. I followed
along, walking at its pace until the shelter came between us. I moved
ahead close to the small patch of dogwood just east of the small beach
and watched as he walked down the grassy slope to the lower path. He
seemed to want to go where I was standing, so I moved away and above and
sure enough he headed straight for the dogwood thicket. I know its an
introduced species, are they common at all in the area? It seem like
Discovery Park would be a good place for them. I've never seen a Bobwhite
before, but I got a good long look at close range, and this was a male
Northern Bobwhite.
