Ileen and other Tweeters,
Here is the easiest place to see Mountain Quail in Kitsap County, Mountain
Quail are frequently heard on green mountain but rarely seen. For
directions to Green Mountain. Take Newberry Hill Rd. off of Hwy. 3 near
Bremerton. When you come to a t-stop of Seabeck Hwy. Turn left. Continue
on until you come to NW Holly Rd. turn onto Holly Rd. and continue past
both entrances to Wildcat Lk. rd. The trailhead (marked) is on the left.
Caution:
It is 4.5 miles to the top of green mountain, by hiking birding is great
ALL 4.5 miles. If the hike uphill is too long for you and you want some
great views, and I MEAN GREAT VIEWS. Can see Seattle and the Hood Canal to
the Olympics. Imagine with in about 100 yards you can see clear across the
Kitsap penisula and see both the Olympics and Cascades. Anyway, you may
drive to the top during 9:00 AM-5:00 PM June-September. To do this
continue past the Trailhead and turn on Tahuya Lk. Rd. Once on Tahuya Lk.
Rd. turn onto GM-1 which is on the left (gravel logging DNR road) and take
this too the top. Hermit Warblers and Mountain Quail can be found from the
campground and up. (~1200 ft. and up) If you wish to go into the
campground take GM-3 off of GM-1. Hope this helps Ileen and other
tweeters.

Lois (and other interested Tweeters),

Here's a belated posting of directions to the reported
Mt Quail area in Kitsap County, Washington.

Follow Hwy 16 west from I-5 in Tacoma and cross the Tacoma
Narrows bridge. Continue north on Hwy 16 and exit at the Purdy-
Shelton exit. Follow Hwy 302 across the causeway and up the hill.
Turn right on 94th Ave NW which soon turns into Sidney Rd and go
norht for 3.5 miles to the Port Orchard airport (Kitsap Co. Air-
port?) The Quail are most easily found in the morning in the log-
ging slash and Scotch broom to the west and north of the airport
complex. Access is through the airport gate which is always open.
Be sure to seek permission to enter from the on-site manager who
lives in a trailer behind the vacant restaurant building. Another
adjoining area is at a dirt pullout several hundred yards north
of the airport on the west side of Sidney Rd and across from the end
of SW Lakeway Blvd. From here, walk west into the conifers and
check the edge areas to the south and west. See the Delorme Atlas
page 62, A-3. The atlas' depiction of roads in this area is incom-
plete.

Those directions are verbatim from the "Washington
Birder" Vol. 1 No. 2. I've never personally visited the area
so can't vouch for the accuracy of directions. If you're headed
to Pt No Pt looking for Ancient Murrelets this won't be too far
out of the way. By the way, Ancient Murrelets have been fewer
this fall-winter than last. You'll need luck I think. Let me
know if you find your birds and whether the directions are OK

Best of Luck,
