I was very excited to see a couple of bewicks wrens carrying nesting material
to a birdhouse that's been resting on a brick wall in our back yard for a
couple of years. I'll have to say that it is quite a charming sight now,
because there's a beautiful clematis vine, in full bloom, climbing all over
the birdhouse and the wall. I thought....those wrens know a pretty place
when the see it.
The wrens were together for one morning. Then the next day, it was only one
bird bringing nesting material to the house. Now, there is no sign of them,
although I can hear bewick wren calls not far away in the neighborhood.
I've read that bewick wrens will sometimes build a false nest. Is this
correct? Why do you suppose they do this?
