Announcement of general interest about a new bird book. This book is a =
masterpiece. The fact that it is indexed both by species and by county =
means that researchers can get a handle on regional or species research =
very quickly. There are only 600 copies being published. AC

NEW BOOK DOCUMENTS EARLY OREGON ORNITHOLOGY

A new book to be published next month by the Oregon State University =
Press
fills an important gap in Oregon bird literature. "Annotated =
Bibliography
of Oregon Bird Literature Published Before 1935" by George A. Jobanek
offers a valuable new resource for professional and informed amateur
ornithologists, wildlife managers, biologists, ecologists, and anyone =
with
a serious interest in the natural history of the Pacific Northwest.

A publication party and booksigning to celebrate the release of =
Jobanek's
book will be held Tuesday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Portland Audubon
Society's Audubon House. The event is free and open to the public. The
monthly Birders Night will follow at 7:30 p.m. For information, please =
call
(503) 725-5752.

For this exhaustive, richly annotated bibliography, George Jobanek
carefully researched early ornithological, scientific, and natural =
history
publications for records of Oregon birds. Most of these early articles
about birds in Oregon and Oregon observations are today relatively rare;
many were overlooked or ignored by previous bibliographers. In his
annotations for each of the nearly two thousand entries, Jobanek conveys
the salient points of each article and reveals its usefulness for
contemporary readers. Jobanek includes quotations from many of the =
original
references, especially descriptions of abundance and range.

References are organized by author and cross-indexed by species (e.g., =
86
entries for Sage Grouse), county (e.g., 220 entries for Klamath County),
and key word (e.g., "behavior," "distribution," "migration," "nesting,"
"taxonomy," "conservation"). A gazetteer identifies localities mentioned =
in
the annotations.

Jobanek's careful scholarship offers researchers a base for future =
studies
and allows readers a glimpse of an earlier, golden age in ornithology.

The publication of the bibliography will be limited to 600 copies. The
price of the 496-page hardcover book is $45.00 It will be available =
after
June 3 from the Portland Audubon Society Nature Store, the OSU =
Bookstore,
or directly from the OSU Press, 101 Waldo Hall, Dept. E, Corvallis, =
Oregon
97331-6407, (541) 737-3166. Mail orders to the Press must include =
payment
plus postage and handling (Book Rate: $2.50 for the first copy + 75=A2 =
for
each additional copy; UPS: $5.00 for the first copy + 75=A2 for each
additional). Libraries, educational institutions, government agencies, =
and
municipalities receive a 20% discount with authorized purchase order or
prepayment.

Substantial gifts from the following donors helped make publication of =
the
bibliography possible: Bureau of Land Management; Garrett Eddy; Merlin =
and
Elsie Eltzroth; Forest and Range Ecosystem Science Center, Biological
Resources Division, U.S.G.S.; Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife,
Wildlife Diversity Program; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The OSU =
Press
is grateful for their support.

of Oregon Wildlife" by Blair Csuti, A. Jon Kimerling, Thomas A. O'Neil,
Margaret M. Shaughnessy, Eleanor P. Gaines, and Manuela M.P. Huso (July
