Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday May 22. If you have anything to add call Harry nehls at
233-3976.
A male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH, among a flock of AMERICAN and LESSER
GOLDFINCHES, was reported May 15 from Lower Table Rock, north of Medford.
The flock was along the lower end of the trail just before it begins the
steep climb. There have been no reports since this sighting.
The COMMON MOORHEN continues to be seen along the Central Patrol Road in
Malheur NWR. It is found 2.2 miles south of the Malheur Field Station and
about .9 of a mile south of a cattle guard. It is very elusive and time is
needed to wait it out.
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at Page Springs and two BLACKPOLL WARBLERS
were at Malheur Headquarters May 17. A MOCKINGBIRD was at the Malheur Field
Station May 18, and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Fields May 17. On May
15 a RUFFED GROUSE was found at the 6000' level of Steens Mountain.
Migrations have tapered off noticeably during the week. OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHERS, PEWEES, and BROWN PELICANS were frequently mentioned as still
moving.
Two RED KNOTS were at Bandon May 20. On May 15 several hundred SOOTY
SHEARWATERS were off Lincoln County, and a FORK-TAILED STORM-PETREL, an
ANCIENT MURRELET, and three MARBLED MURRELETS were off Moolack Beach. A
TUNDRA SWAN was on Meares Lake at Tillamook Bay May 16. Two ARTIC TERNS
were with BONAPARTE'S GULLS of the South Jetty of the Columbia River May
18. A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was at the shorebird flats there May 17 and 18. A
few miles to the south, a GOSHAWK was soaring over Camp Rilea.
A second MOCKINGBIRD in Portland was reported May 17 near the corner of
North Polk and Jersey Streets in the St. Johs district. The MOCKINGBIRD at
Northeast 53d. and Everett Streets was still being reported.
A small tern was seen at the Forest Grove Ponds May 15, and a lone swan was
there May 16. The open water, marshes and flats at the Forest Grove Ponds
attract a good variety of bird and is well worth a visit if in the area.
A WHITE-THROATED SWIFT was over Cabell Marsh in Finley NWR May 18. A pair
of BLACK PHOEBES are now in the Creswell Golf Course area south of Eugene.
A female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was at Hatfield Lake near Bend May 20. A
pair of RED-NECKED GREBES were at Wickiup Reservoir, south of Bend May 18.
Many BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were found that day along the Cascade Lakes
Parkway.
A May 18 trip along the Umatilla River From Pendleton to Gibbon found early
VEERIES and CATBIRDS already on territory. Several BLACK-CHINNED
HUMMINGBIRDS were also noted.
On May 10 eleven LEWIS' WOODPECKERS and two ACORN WOODPECKERS wre found on
a survey in Klckatat County, Washington across the Columbia River from Hood
River to near Hermiston. They also noted 101 NASHVILLE WARBLERS.
Thats it for this week.
