This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Let's start at the Walla Walla River Delta in western Walla Walla Co,
WA. On May 16, Mike and MerryLynn Denny saw a single, adult
FRANKLIN'S GULL, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, and a breeding-
plumaged SANDERLING. The delta is just north of the junction of US
730 and US 12, about 15 miles southeast of the Tri-Cities. WA
DeLorme 40, D1.

Mike also reports some good birds from the Pendleton, OR area from
May 15. Just west of Gibbon, which is due east of Pendleton, along
Squaw Creek, the Denny's saw a pair of BLACK SWIFTS in a flock of
VAUX'S SWIFTS. Between Squaw Creek and Thorn Hollow, which is
between Gibbon and Pendleton, at milepost 15, there's a cottonwood
gallery and a pair of AMERICAN REDSTARTS. South of Gibbon, along
I-84, take Exit 228 to Old Immigrant Hill Scenic Drive. Just as the
drive starts climbing to the state park, check for a pair of GRAY
CATBIRDS. OR DeLorme 86, B3.

On May 12, Winnie Hepburn saw WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS at
Palouse Falls State Park, which is SE of Washtucna, WA. In the town
of Washtucna, Winnie had a minor fall-out in the city park. She saw
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, RED-EYED VIREOS, RUBY-
CROWNED KINGLETS, TOWNSEND'S WARLBER, and WESTERN
TANAGERS. Washtucna is at the junction of WA 260 and WA 26.
WA DeLorme 55, C6.

Winnie also reports 13 CASPIAN TERNS at Rock Lake in northern
Whitman Co., WA on May 9. Rock Lake is north of Ewan, between
St. John and Sprague, just north of WA 23. WA DeLorme 72, C3.

In and around Moscow, ID this past week were some interesting birds.
Dave Holick reports a pair of WILSON'S PHALAROPES, a single RED-
NECKED PHALAROPE, and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the Syringa
Trailer Park sewage ponds, along Robinson Park Road about 3 miles
northeast of Moscow. From Moscow, take Joseph Street east from
Mountainview, following the signs for Robinson Park.

There was a big wave of CHIPPING SPARROWS, with birds seemingly
calling everywhere, including one on the corner of 8th and Park in
Moscow, according to Mike Scott.
Along the Genesee-Juliaetta Road, just west of Juliaetta, I found 2
BEWICK'S WRENS near the top of the grade. They were in the
hawthornes inside the first real switchback at the top of the grade. ID
DeLorme 58, C2.

Jan and Neil Martin report YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS along the
Clearwater River east of Lewiston, ID this past week.

I had 14 male LAZULI BUNTINGS at my Moscow feeder at one time
this past week, a single ROCK WREN, and a male BLACK-CHINNED
HUMMINGBIRD.

Travelers to Mann Lake should note that East Main Street is closed for
construction. Alternate route is as follows: enter Lewiston from the
north on US 12 and cross the Clearwater River. At the first traffic
light, head up the hill on 21st Street. Keep heading up hill, past the
Wal-Mart where 21st Street becomes Thain. Stay on Thain until Thain
goes from 4 lanes to 2. Just as Thain curves right, turn left onto
Powers Avenue. Continue straight on Powers Avenue a few miles until
you reach the reservoir.

Good birding!
