This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for May 14,

On May 6, Ruth Fischer reported the first BULLOCK'S ORIOLE to appear
locally. It was in her south Richland yard.

Also on May 6 and 7, a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW came to my (Bob Woodley's)
feeder. Another Golden-crowned and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW were found in WE
Johnson Park on the 7th, while a WESTERN TANAGER was seen in Groves Park and
a LARK SPARROW was seen along Horn Rapids Road (Bob Woodley).

Randy Hill of Othello reports a new HERON AND EGRET ROOKERY across the
Columbia from the B & C reactor area. If you float the river and can verify
this, call Randy at 509-488-2668.

A pair if LAZULI BUNTING and a HARRIS' SPARROW graced Barbara Clarke's
feeder in Pasco on May 8 and I found 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS in Groves Park on
that date.

Dennis Rockwell observed an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER along the nature trail in
Two Rivers Park on May 9 and a WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE on May 10.

Also on May 10, Cecilia O'Shaunassy (SP?) noted a BELTED KINGFISHER on the
railing of the Van Giesen Street bridge.

BLUE-WINGED TEAL were present on the McNary NWR and at the Walla Walla River
Delta on May 9 and at the latter location, 3 GREAT EGRET were seen along
with 4 BLACK-NECKED STILT, 17 AMERICAN AVOCET, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, A
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 10 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 DUNLIN, AND 18 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.

On May 11, Ruth Fischer observed a male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD at her
feeder, the first member of this species reported this spring.

THE bird of the reporting period however is the WILLET found by Dennis
Rockwell at the pond on the Walla Walla Delta, just east of Madame Dorian
Park. It was accompanied there by 1 GREAT EGRET, 30 AMERICAN AVOCET, a
SPOTTED SANDPIPER and about 4 LEAST SANDPIPER.

Lastly, today, a family of LONG-EARED OWLS, 2 adults and 3 young, were seen
on Bateman Island by Greg Greger. They are located on the east portion of
the loop trail. For specific directions, call Greg at 943-3951.
