Tweeters, An afternoon birding trip to Moses Meadow on the Colville
Reservation in Northcental Washington today yielded several Lewis'
Woodpeckers, along with Mountain Bluebirds, Western Meadowlarks,
Killdeers, and others - several of which our five-year-old added to her
life list. As she played with tadpoles and we stood listening to Common
Snipes calling eerily back and forth (we were wistfully wishing for a
great gray owl to appear), we saw two "cows" in the far distance.
Something wasn't right with the cow jiz, so we looked again, and
realized we were looking at two bears - one reddish-brown and the other
Angus-black. We watched them climb an enormous pine. The black one
went first, apparently to take a nap. The lighter bear followed, but
there must not have been room for two, because the second one backed
casually down. They say bears are common around here, but we don't
commonly run across them and this was a treat.
