Hi tweets

Following the article by Ken Knittle in the most recent WOS News, I birded
the Cowlitz River bottoms near Woodland, Washington. In a couple of hours,
I found most of the summer species mentioned by Ken, plus a number of other
interesting species. (Sadly I missed Red-eyed Vireo, a potential state
bird for me.) Interesting birds were all swallows except Bank, including
Purple Martins; both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs; American Bittern, Sora
and Virginia Rail (all heard only); one Horned Lark (any guesses on
subspecies?) and two Western Meadowlarks. Wilson's and Yellow Warblers
were all over, as were Willow Flycatchers, House Wrens and Swainson's
Thrushes. Anyone on I-5 between Seattle and Portland with a little time on
their hands, stop by this very birdy area.

For those who aren't members of W.O.S. (tsk, tsk), take the Dike Access
Road exit, just north of Woodland and head west toward the Columbia River.
A left turn at the T intersection near the river puts you on Dike Road,
which you can essentially follow and use to get to downtown Woodland, from
there back to I-5.

Good birding,

Tim
