A few years ago on our way back to Washington we stopped off at the
Sacramento NWR to look for pond turtles. A refuge employee told us
that while the Sacramento NWR wasn't the best, the NWR about an hour's driving
to the south (I forget the name) had an excellent pond turtle viewing area.
Unfortunately, we were on our way back north and this would have added a
couple
of hours to our day.

A reptilian consolation prize that day was the "Giant" Aquatic Garter Snake
swimming across the display pond.

And digging up old memories--we used to almost trip over pond turtles while
birding the Woodland Sugar Ponds near Woodland CA. That may still be a viable
site?
