Probably the next birding report from this area of the Okanogan will be in
Feb, if we can get up there. But for folks who like the birding available
in the area, and for people concerned about habitat destruction, you have
a chance now to help stop a salvage logging project planned for next
summer. There are 2 timber sales, the Long Draw Salvage and Dog Salvage
that have been planned and will be put up for auction soon. Both will
enter roadless areas and adversely impact the unique boreal ecosystem.
Because of the controversial nature of these sales, they are receiving
alot of scrutiny before they are offered. A phone call or letter to the
following individuals could make a huge difference to the integrity of
some of Washington's finest boreal habitat. For more information, contact
me directly. To voice a concern contact:

The Honorable Patty Murray, U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510
Phone: 202/224-2621, Fax: 202/224-0238

The Honorable Gary Locke, State of Washington, P.O. Box 40002, Olympia,
98504-0002 Phone: 360/753-6780, Fax: 360/753-4110

Kathleen McGinty, Council on Environmental Quality, Executive Office of
the
President, 722 Jackson Place, NW, Washington, DC 20503
Phone: 202/456-6224, Fax: 202/456-2710

Ask them to cancel the Long Draw Sale and oppose further planning of the
Dog Sale.

Thanks to all who respond, and to all who have come up to the area to bird
or attend a Thunder Mountain workshop.
