Tweeters: As our class was walking to a creek area to check the feeders
we saw na immature rough-legged hawk fly above. It had black patches on
the carpal joint under the wing and had a light head and a whitish rump. It
was the first rough-legged hawk we have seen around the school grounds.
The first ever recorded near the school. After a quick
low flight over us it circled up and left. We figured it was wintering
here. It was very exciting because it is very rare to see one of these
incredible hawks.

During an afternoon (tennis-ball) baseball game the class saw an
accipiter fly over the field. We had just gone through the slides of the
16 (2-2-3-4-5) diurnal raptors of Western Washington. So far this year we
have had; merlin, sharpie, cooper's, bald, red-tailed, and rough fly by.
