Paul asked -

* Which is the best seed nutritionally for birds - striped or oil,
and why? Is there a nutritional analysis of sunflower seed available
for each type?

Best to hit a Web search engine for this. My comment would be that I have been told (you will have to suffer with anectodal info here) that birds metabolize fat much more efficiently than humans. Their most nutritious diet is thus one high in fat and low in carbohydrates - the opposite of ours. Since black oil sunflower seeds have a higher fat ratio than striped, I would assume therefore that black oil seeds would supply more fuel for the winter heat engine.
