Best places for CAGU near UBC, Reto, is around and between the East & West
Spanish Banks snack bars, where you'll see them all year, though less
commonly between October and March. Especially on sunny days when the snack
bars are open and lots of gulls, mostly Glaucous-winged (GWGU), Ring-billed
(RBGU) and California Gulls (CAGU), and Mew Gulls (MEGU) and Western X
Glaucous-winged hybrids ('Olympic' Gulls) in winter, concentrate there to
panhandle. A great place, BTW, to distinguish and study the differences
between them, espec. the juv-to-adult plumages of RBGU & CAGU. While you sip
your coffee at one of the picnic tables, there's a clinic in Gull ID to be
had for the price of an overpriced Park Board hot-dog (proof that gulls have
the stomach to digest anything).
