I live on the north end of Rocky Point in Bremerton and am situated with a
western view out over Dyes Inlet toward the Olympics. Two weeks ago my wife
and I took a few days on the Oregon coast. We did not see one whale. When
we returned we found a goodly part of the L pod of Orca whales were doing
their thing in front of our house. It's been fun watching them these last
few days.

This evening I took a dip in the old hot tub (tough life). There was a low
ceiling, almost fog to the deck, low light and little sound. After a few
moments I became aware of sounds from the water. Over a period of about 45
minutes I listened to the whales as they periodically surfaced for a breath.
I think there were 4 or 5 animals in this small group. They would come to
the surface one at a time in quick succession then not be heard for about 2
minutes. As I listened I also heard a loon in the distance.

A couple days ago I was doing my thing in the morning when I heard several
of the local gulls sounding like they had just lots their best friend. Such
mournful sounds. I poked my head out just in time to see three bald eagles
land in the top of a fir in front of the house about 150 feet away. I had
my scope handy for the whales so put it on the eagles. Two adults and what
looked like a two year old. No bands were observed.

Ain't nature grand? (to use the best of grammar)
