Subject: grouse

I am the Upland Bird Research Biologist for the
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Currently,
I am updating range maps for grouse species within the
state of Washington. The Olympic Peninsula is an area
of special interest. Although current range maps do not
indicate the presence of white-tailed ptarmigan and
spruce grouse on the Olympic Peninsula, occasional
observations (unconfirmed) suggest otherwise. In
addition, about 3 years ago we obtained an adult female
spruce grouse wing that was placed in a wing barrel on
the Olympic Peninsula. However, we could not verify
where this bird was harvested (hunters may place wings
in barrels where they do not hunt). Consequently, I
would like to obtain more detailed information on the
observations of spruce grouse and/or white-tailed
ptarmigan from the Olympic Peninsula. Detailed
descriptions of actual locations would be extremely
useful as these two species are territorial. Thank you
for your help. My e-mail address follows.
