My mother and I observed the BROWN BOOBY from Diamond Pt. today from
1:30-1:30pm and again from 4-4:30pm on the "booby rock" near the center of
the south side of Protection Island in Jefferson Co. My mother origanally
found out about the recent sighting yesterday on the Pt. Townsend birding
cruise from Peter Badame. The visibility wasn't the best, but we were able
to make out the dark brown back, neck, and head contrasting to the white
belly, not being able to see such details as bill or feet due to these
conditions. The juv. SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was also observed and
photograped at the 3 Crabs "horse pond" with 12 Dunlin and 7 L.B.
Dowitchers, which appears to be possibly the the same individual I observed
on Oct. 4th, found by Bob Boekelheide, so photos will prove otherwise. How
many records of this species are this late in the season in the
Northwest(?), other than a late date on Dec. 21st, 1976 at Iona Island,
according to Dennis Paulson's shorebird book. Can 1 bird stay over a month
at this somewhat well birded spot, or is the possibility of 2 or more birds
a greater theory? I appreciate any replies!
