Took a swing out to Vancouver Lake before the vapidity of student
conferences. Interesting sightings were as follows:

--For the Kingfisher survey, 3 birds all male, 2 at Vancouver Lake Park,
1 more about a mile south of the park.
--Meadowlarks are starting to be a more noteworthy presence. 7 were seen
today, up from 1 and 2 in the last two trips.
--16 Tundra and 2 Trumpeter Swans. The Trumpeters were by themselves at
the northern end of the road up to the refuge. A flock of feeding
cormorants came up to them and they looked very disturbed--"George, look
at the rabble . . ."
--Among the mixed Cormorant/Gull flock on Vancouver Lake were at least 4
Bonaparte's Gulls, the first I've seen here. Only 1 Western and 7 Horned
Grebes seen.
--Good numbers of sparrows and blackbirds around.
--There may be nothing more beautiful than an immature Harrier's
coloration in the very early morning redness of the sun.
