Stanley Park has a number of Canada Goose pairs nesting in the hollowed
cores of topped-off oldgrowth cedars. I think the lowest one is about 35
meters (100+ feet) up. There's also a few pairs which have learned to nest
on balconies of high rise apartment and office buildings, always good for an
'aw-gee-isn't-that-cute'-type story on the local TVnews when things are
slack, and sometimes I've seen the local stations news programs run one of
these aw-gee's against a story about 'killer crows'. Don't get me started
about what I think of the quality of local newsgathering, but I will say
that it remains unstated by the reporter that these crazed corvids are just
parents defending nest/young against an animal *much* bigger than they are.
Ironic: they're both about parenthood, but one's sentimentalised, the other
presented as nature-gone-um, well, wild.

If crows ever watch TV and see the way they're portrayed by our usual
newsbarkers, they could be excused for wanting fervently to strafe us, young
or no young.
