I have noticed quite a bit about cliff nesting Canada Geese
lately, and I just wanted to say something. In the Midwest, and a few
other places, the conservation department and the department of Fish and
Wildlife have been erecting large tubs on poles, and placing them 10 feet
in from the edge of lakes. They cut spots for drainage, fill them half
way with straw, and cut away most of the side in one spot. The geese use
these readily for nesting, and they are protected from predators this
way. Predation of nests (mainly human vandalism) had been a problem in
the past, but placing them in the water, like Wood Duck nest boxes, they
have stopped natural predation and dramatically lowered vandalism. The
spot where the side is cut away makes it easiwer for the goslings to get
out. I have also seen Canada Geese nesting on the tops of flat roofed
buildings in St. Louis.
