Tweeters -

The following message was posted on Birdchat. I know that White-winged
Crossbills were reported in Washington state and in BC in October, but
since my report would be second hand, I thought it best to forward this
message to Tweeters and ask that someone with more authoritative
information respond to Steve Kelling.

Thanks.

Phil

>I apologize for the delay, but I have put together the results of the query
>I sent out at the end of last month regarding the occurrence of winter
>finches and Red-breasted Nuthatch in North America.

>The finches I am interested in include Pine Grosbeak, Purple Finch,
>Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll, Pine
>Siskin, and Evening Grosbeak.

>My query on BirdChat on 31 Oct. drew close to 75 responses. It was very
>exciting to hear from so many people, many of which indicated that this
>year is shaping up to be a major invasion year. For example, White-winged
>Crossbills are being reported from all across the East and Midwest,
>Red-breasted Nuthatches are being reported from South Texas, and Common
>Redpolls were reported from Maryland on record early dates.
>
>To show the results of my query, I have generated a web site located at:

>The site presents the following:
>
>1- A map showing which states and provinces had reports of these birds in
>October.
>
>2- A sound file for each species. The sounds, which came from the Library of
>Natural Sounds at Cornell University, provide examples of flight calls
>and contact calls from all species of interest.
>
>3- An image of each species.
>
>4- A form to fill in your future observations. You can fill out a form any
>time you observe any of the winter finches listed above or a Red-breasted
>Nuthatch.
>Please include the state or province, date, number of individuals
>(estimates are fine), and your postal code (ZIP code in U.S.).
>
>We at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will use your results to produce
>maps showing the movements of winter finches through North America. Using
>postal codes, we will be able to pinpoint the locations of the birds. Maps
>will be updated on a weekly or biweekly basis.
>
>I hope that you will all participate, as the more information we receive,
>the more detailed maps we will be able to present. Please feel free to
>copy and distribute this note.
>
>Thanks to all you replied to my initial query.
