I, too, missed the web page suggested by Richard Rowlett, so decided to
check out the Whale Museum page, as subsequently recommended by Francis
Mains. (Very nice, by the way.)

And I've followed the UFO/birding/white pelican thread with interest. I
could relate to Michael Price's and Richard Rowlett's frustration at having
never seen a UFO -- because until the orcas showed up in Dyes Inlet, I've
been frustrated at not seeing killer whales in Puget Sound. Particularly so
since I moved to Port Townsend: whenever something interesting turns up "up
sound," I've tended to whine about missing it, because "They had to have
gone by *here* first!"

Well, after today maybe I'll stop whining (at least, for a while ;). This
afternoon at 2 pm I was scoping birds on Port Townsend Bay, stretching the
zoom out to a group of Long-tailed Ducks, when just beyond them I saw
dorsal fins appear, roll, and disappear. "What?! Is my mind playing tricks?
Is this just wishful thinking?!" But no -- I zoomed the lens further and
adjusted the focus in time to see two more sizable dorsal fins rise, then
fall. The orcas appeared to be leisurely heading north, out Admiralty
Inlet. I kept watching; the next vision was of a huge dorsal, obviously
male, rolling up and up, then seemingly taking about 5 minutes to submerge.
YIPPEE!!

I wasn't imagining it.

So -- was this the "L Pod 19," headed back north? Or part of another pod?
Either way, sign me
