Hello Tweets,
I was observing a flock of Gulls today to the right of the KGY station in
East Bay today, the usual gulls were there, Ring-billed, Mew,
Glaucous-winged, and the hybrids. But one of the gulls stumped me. It
looked like a regular adult Western Gull: Pinkish Legs, dark primaries, with
a slightly paler mantle. I guess you can say the usual characteristics of a
Western Gull, but, the bill was pinkish, with a fading black ring on it. it
also had what looked to be a light colored eye.
I clearly observed this bird through my scope, perched on the mudflat near
shore for about 20 minutes, taking in every field mark I could. but I am
still stumped, any ideas?
Is this just a possible 3rd winter bird? or something else,... hybrid?
There were no other adult Western Gulls around for which to compare it with.
Any help would be appreciated, I am still working on my Gull Identifications,
especially the young ones.
