Columbia Estuary Report 11/22/97

The storms this week did not bring all that many surprises to
the Columbia Estuary.

There are 2 TRUMPETER SWANS and 2 TUNDRA SWANS on Black Lake in
Ilwaco, Pacific Co, WA.

A pair of adult BALD EAGLES have taken up a loafing position on
the Necanicum Estuary in Seaside. There are (apparently) 2 GREAT
EGRETS wintering there, as well, though I did not see them when
I checked on Saturday morning. A NORTHERN FULMAR, a HEERMANNS
GULL and a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE were among this disappointed
surfers at the Seaside Cove.

I drove Clatsop Beach from the Peter Iredale access to the Del Rey
access (about 14.5km). There were DUNLIN along the entire beach
without any substantial breaks. There was also a serious wreck of
NORTHERN FULMARS. The beach count follows:

White-winged Scoter 1
Black-bellied Plover 1
Dunlin 2400
Sanderling 400
Western Sandpiper 1

Among the dead:
Western Grebe 2
Pacific Loon 1
Northern Fulmar 34
Cassin's Auklet 2
