I thought all you Chestnut-backed fans would like to hear I had my first
sighting of these little gems this September. And I saw them at what is
most likely the most northern portion of their range - Girdwood, Alaska.

While out in the deep hemlock/spruce forest, I heard some chickadees. I
almost just walked right on by, but something told me to stop and look -
probably my love for the little cheerful fellows. Anyways, much to my
surprise, I was rewarded with my first sighting of the Chestnut-backed
Chickadee. They are wonderful, aren't they. And by the way, this
sighting occured just a couple days after seeing a family group of
White-tailed Ptarmigan, another first for me! These were seen high in
the alpine of the Chugach mountains near Anchorage, Alaska.

Already dreaming of springtime in Alaska!
