This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

An immature female OLDSQUAW was seen today, November 21, in
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co., ID by Dan and Ila Svingen. This lone Long-
tailed Duck was keeping company with 600 or so BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE in the Clearwater River near the Lewiston Grain Terminal.
The Svingen's also report a lone, drake, CANVASBACK at West Pond.
To see these birds, follow US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the
Clearwater River, stay in the right lane as it wraps around Locomotive
Park bypassing the traffic light, and at the next light, which is 18th
Street, turn right on the US 12 bypass. In about a mile, you'll come to
the parking lot for West Pond. From the levee at West Pond, you can
stroll back east to view across the river at the grain terminal. You can
also backtrack across the river, turn left on 3rd Avenue North, and go
about 0.5 mile to the grain terminal parking area where you can ascend
the levee for a little closer look. ID DeLomre 54, A-1.

After last weeks marathon announcement about CATTLE EGRETS, only
two reports this week. A lone bird was near Cataldo, Kootenai Co., ID
this past week. Keith Sturts reports Susan Weller spied a single bird
on Nov 15 west of Cataldo along I-90. ID DeLorme 60, B-3. Mike and
MerryLynn Denny saw 6 CATTLE EGRETS in northern Umatilla Co.,
OR, between College Place, WA and Milton-Freewater, OR. The birds
were at the junction of Ballue Road and the Old Milton Highway, near
Ingels (sp?) Chapel.

Also there was a single FRANKLIN'S GULL, which MerryLynn spied
and Mike says is the first winter record east of the Cascades in
Oregon. Sorry, the OR DeLorme isn't any help with this one.
.
An adult MEW GULL was at Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane,
WA on Nov 15, according to Jeff Wisman. The bird was at the east
end of Havermill (sp?) Island.

Five BLUE JAYS were at the feeder of Tom Besser on Nov 15 and
again on the 16. Tom lives at the base of Moscow Mountain, Latah
Co., ID, just north of Moscow. In the same general area, Tom Fyles
reports a single BLUE JAY at his Moscow Mt. feeder this past week
and Clare Wiser tells that some friends of his on the west end of
Moscow Mt. have had up to 6 jays coming to their feeder. Because of
privacy issues, your best bet is to see the jays at Tom Besser's. Give
him a call to see if they're still around and to get directions
208-882-6254.

Five AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were on the old Whitebird Grade,
Idaho Co., ID on Nov 15, according to Dan Svingen. The birds were
along the Whitebird Battlefield Autotour near Swartz's Pond. From
Grangeville, follow US 95 south 9.8 miles. Turn left (east) at milepost
230 and go 5.0 miles to the pull-out. Go through the walk-through
gate on the right side of the road toward the pond. ID DeLorme 54,
right at the bottom, right on the crease.

Two BEWICK'S WRENS and a single HERMIT THRUSH were in a
brushy draw on the north side of Paradise Ridge, Latah Co., ID on Nov
20, according to Charles Swift. Paradise Ridge is just south of
Moscow. To get to the birds, take ID 8 through Moscow. From the
traffic light at Eastside Marketplace, follow the highway 1.3 miles to
Lenville Road. Turn right on Lenville and follow it as it eventually goes
through the trailer park. Just past the trailer park, veer right onto
Blaine Road. Follow Blaine until it Y's. Check the brushy areas around
the intersection for the birds. ID DeLorme 58, C-1.

The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK that has been persisting near the Walla
Walla River Delta in western Walla Walla Co., southeast of Pasco, WA
for about 6 weeks, was seen again on Nov 18, according to Mike and
MerryLynn Denny. The bird was still at Madame Doriane (sp?) Park,
which is just north of the junction of US 730 and US 12. At Madame
Doriane today, Nov 21, the Denny's saw 2 sub-adult HARRIS'S
SPARROWS and a single WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. The
sparrows were along the little dirt road, which is just beyond the
bathrooms, and runs west along the Walla Walla River. WA DeLorme
40, D-1.
