Since Mr. Xantus was apparently a Hungarian, the s
at the end of his name would have been pronounced
"sh", at least by Hungarians. However, there is no
x in the Hungarian alphabet, so Hungarians are
probably e-mailing their bird chat groups with all
sorts of speculation on how the beginning of his
name was pronounced. Perhaps it was a foreign,
non-Hungarian name (what? Albanian?), in which
case - oh, never mind.
