Over a period of several months during 1956, in the Headquarters (a Potlatch Inc. company town) area of the North Fork Clearwater River region of North Idaho, there was a frequently seen albino raven. It was a beautiful and noteworthy sight in our community and in the nearby logging camps scattered north and east across the rough, forested terrain. I suppose, because it was so singular-a kind of seven-point among ravens--its destiny was nearly inescapable. Its life was trivialized by someone into a special plincking prize. It was target-practiced to death along a muddy road near the town dump during that fall hunting season. I happened across the discarded heap of now smudged, once angelic, whiteness within what must have been a few hours. Had I had been older and wiser, I might have made a greater attempt at preserving or mounting its remains. I salvaged only a glistening white wing which I spread to dry, and which, on occasion, I still come across among my things. The incredulity and outrage of forty years ago returns.
